What Are Your Net Predictions For 2008?

Quick, how many people knew in late 2006 that Facebook was going to turn into the monster that it has? That it would have blogs dedicated solely to making money on Facebook? A few probably saw it coming, but while Facebook’s stock has been on the rise for the probably longer than a year, 2007 has to go down as the “Year of Facebook”. Before that it was YouTube.

But what’s next?

Is 2008 going to be the year that RSS goes huge? (I hope so). Or is the next huge thing going to come from Google? Or even, gasp! Microsoft? Will there be something else that comes along and becomes the next online version of the pet rock, or is 2008 going to be a year with everything just kind of plodding along? Don’t bet on it.

Personally, I think it’s going to come from one of two companies: Google or WordPress. The first one’s pretty solid, and the second is just a hunch. Google has so much stuff on the go, though, that it’s hard to predict what exactly it’ll be. Safe bets would be either the Android platform for mobile phones, or a revamping of the PageRank algorithm, which I’m sure would make a lot of bloggers happy. New forms of Adsense units, like the newly released video units, would be great too.

As for WordPress, like I said, it’s just a hunch. Their 2.4 version is due for release early in January, and it’s supposed to have a re-worked version of the admin interface, which I know *I* would appreciate. For some reason I have a feeling that they’re going to release something in 2008, probably towards the end, that’s going to make people go, “Oh. My. God.”

If I’m right, you can say that you heard it here first. ;) And if I’m wrong, that’s cool too.

I like to think that Linux Ubuntu will gain some serious ground in the OS realm. It still has a bit of work until it can be a candidate for the iPod/music/video generation, but it’s quickly getting there.

I think the “mainstream” software companies are going to really start to feel the pinch in 2008. Firefox, Gimp, Open Office, Ubuntu, etc… they’re all gaining ground and fast.

I think 2008 is going to be a lot of fun to blog.

Oh.. and I’m intrigued about your thoughts on Wordpress. I can’t help but feel the same hunch.

I don’t know about you but something revolutionary with wordpress sounds excellent to me. I’m not really going to get excited over android or anything microsoft pumps out.

@Eric: Thanks very much for your comment. I agree that Ubuntu isn’t perfect, especially for iPod use, but it’s getting better with each release. I actually find the 7.10 release to be not as good as the 7.04 release was, but maybe that’s just me.

As for WordPress, I have to admit to not being sure just what they might have planned, but I think that they’re going to announce something in mid to late-2008 that’ll make people shake their head, and say, “Brilliant. WHY hasn’t this been done before??”

@EBD: Yeah, they need to come up with something that just makes people bail out en masse from platforms like Drupal and Movable Type. I don’t think Blogger is ever really going to go away.

@Rod Gutsy is HORRIBLE compared to Fawn. I actually had to go back to 7.04 to correct a lot of errors that were happening thanks to 7.10. I’m back to 7.10 now and I’m using very few applications to keep it from getting its undies in a wad.

In regards to mp3 players, I’ve been lucky. I don’t use Apple devices so I never really had a problem there, but it did take a bit for me to be able to A) Play mp3’s and then B) Get them to my gadgets.

The worst headache as far as media for me was getting DVD’s to play. I still have problems viewing some of them. I know I know… I need to add all the codecs and work with the file structure. Well… I did all of that, which made things worse.

I wish with ubuntu you could just open up the backend of a player and tell it what you want it to do. Then, if it can’t do it I want it to tell me what I need to run or install to make it do what I want it to do. Why do I have to jump through 20 hoops just find that gxine or totem aren’t going to work no matter what? VLC was my last resort?

That being said… outside of media players ubuntu is hands down brilliant for an open source operating system. My laptop boots up before I even get the power cord plugged in, the OS never bogs down with too many “processes”, web browser is as fast as can be on my current connection speed, and I’ve never run into any security issues.

All in all, I love ubuntu. I just wish I could pop in season five of Family Guy and watch it without the headache that usually accompanies it.

Sorry for derailing the topic… :-)

@Eric: No worries about derailing the topic. It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one having issues with Gutsy. I just recently moved from XP to Ubuntu again on my home box and haven’t tried hooking the iPod up yet (although it worked fine in Fawn with gtkpod) so I can’t comment on that yet. But it’s little things - screensaver never comes on, the DVD playback, like you mentioned, is horrible. Themes are a pain to install for some reason. Stuff like that. Ah well, maybe things’ll get better in April when 8.04 is released.
