A Look at the WordPress Comment Notifier

Date December 13, 2007

Welcome to BloggingNotes. You may want to subscribe to my full text RSS feed. This message will only appear once. Thanks for visiting!

If you’re like me, you get a healthy number of comments posted on your blog, with most of it hopefully being valid comments, as opposed to being spam.

On the way to work this morning I was listening to the WordPress Podcast, and heard mention of a plug in for WordPress that will monitor your blog and pop up a window when new comments are delivered, similar to the Gmail Notifier.

I figured that I needed to give it a try, so it’s downloaded and currently active here on BloggingNotes. One thing that makes this plug-in different, is that it’s actually a two-parter. You upload and activate the plug-in on your site, just as you would any other plug-in, but then there’s the client side of the application that runs on your PC as well. Or, if you’re a Mac fan, they’ve also got a client for you. Nothing for the penguin-heads, yet, though. Pity.

Once it’s installed, right click on the icon in the system tray, and provide the URL, login and password information for your blog, and that’s it. It’s up and running.

Since installing it this morning, I haven’t actually had any comments come in, so I can’t confirm operation, but how about commenting on this post and we’ll give it a test run, eh?

I’ll post a follow up on this one later today or tomorrow.

Turns out I wasn’t at my desk when it came in. I’ll give it a try now and see.

I don’t see this as being very useful since, like you said in your comment, we’re not always at our computer :???:

That said, I’ve had WordPress send a message to my cell phone to notify me of new comments and comments in moderation for over a year, and it works great for those times I’m away from the desk for the better part of a day.

Unforunate, indeed, for us “penguin-heads” =P
I think, though, that I may soon set up a Virtual Box to run XP. Mainly so that when season 4 of LOST comes out I can watch the stream at ABC’s site, since they no longer support Linux =(

    Interesting little plugin, though. :)

Let us know if you find it useful. Another service you might want to try is coComment…it alerts you when you’ve got a follow-up posting on any blog that you’ve posted on, not just your own. That’s how I keep track of all my comment postings in the blogosphere.

Thanks, Jason, Eric, and J. It turns out that the plug-in works for comments that go into the moderation queue, so if you’ve commented on the site previously as all of you have, including Colin, it doesn’t get picked up by the notifier.

So, if you were the type of blogger who moderated every single comment, then I could see this being a little more useful, but once you’ve been approved on here, I trust you and you’re able to comment again without going through the queue.

And, J, if you mean co.mments.com, I do use it, and actually posted about it back in November.
