Actually, that title is a little misleading. I was able to backup and update three WordPress blogs in less than 12 seconds. There are a few requirements before you can put this in place, which I’ll explain in a bit.Back in April, I was listening to the WordPress Podcast and heard Aaron Brazell mention that b5media is able to get over 200 blogs upgraded in under 30 minutes when WordPress releases an update. While I was doing a little research on this, I came across Brian Layman’s site- he’s b5’s code ninja, and has released a script that will back up your blog, and if there’s a WordPress update, will upgrade the blog automatically. Total time this morning to do my three blogs? 11.88 seconds.
The code for the script is available on Brian’s site, and it’s really as simple as editing it with the URL and directory where your blog is stored, and turning it loose. The file should be run from a directory on your site that’s not publicly available, as that’s where it’s going to put your site backups as well.
To be safe, please make sure that your blog is backed up before you run it the first time. You’re responsible for what happens to your site, and no one else will be liable if something goes wrong. It probably won’t, but wouldn’t you rather make sure, at least the first time?
The requirements that I mentioned above? Your site must be self-hosted (ie, not a wordpress.com site), and you need to have rights to run scripts from the shell. Talk to your host to make sure that they’ve got you set up to do that.
Short of that, it’s a drop dead simple method for backing up and upgrading your blog if you don’t have a system set in place yet.

I checked it out, but I don’t have the access to use it as described.

That’s unfortunate, as it really is a simple way to backup and upgrade your site.
Undoubtedly there’s going to be other methods for doing this as a plug-in, if not now then probably soon.
