Blogging Tips Shocker: Email Subscriptions MIGHT Be Better Than RSS…
January 4, 2008
Welcome to BloggingNotes. You may want to subscribe to my full text RSS feed. This message will only appear once. Thanks for visiting!
Let me start off by saying that this isn’t a post I ever thought I’d be writing. Have no doubt - I *love* RSS and what it allows me to do. But about a month ago, Brian at EliteByDesign asked me to setup email subscriptions for BloggingNotes. I did so, and he immediately subscribed.
Then I looked around at a few blogs that I turn to as sources of very usable information. And I realized that if you’re going to be constantly going back to a particular post to get information, rather than having to find it in your feed reader, having a verbatim copy of the post stored in your email might allow you to find it even more quickly.
Overall, though, I think that RSS is a better use of your time because it allows you to burn through a very large number of posts very quickly. And remember, I won’t read your post if the title sucks. I just don’t have time, particularly with new responsibilities at work. But I can certainly see that there are situations where subscribing to the email could be beneficial.
In fact, I’ve subscribed to both Vic and Court’s email updates, and am looking forward to having quick access to the information that they provide. I’m still subscribed to their RSS feeds as well, because sometimes the best things are made even better when they’re used in conjunction with each other.

I’ve felt the same. I noticed that our really loyal readers do take the email subsription route .

I have never used a feed reader in my life. If a blog I like doesn’t offer subscribe by mail, I just don’t subscribe.
Thanks for the link Rod.

I totally agree with Elite By Design. For me, email is an inbox of things to read, things to do, things to reply to… all in one place. Sometimes I get a bit behind and it gets disorganised, but all of the feed subscription emails are sorted under “Blogs”, so I can filter them out if need be.
There’s really no reason not to provide the option to subscribe by email.

I guess I’m different. I have a hard enough time trying to keep some level of sanity in my Gmail inbox. Having blog subscriptions dump in to it will only make it worse.
I prefer to keep my feeds separate from e-mail. That being said, offering both options to readers is a wise decision.

Agreed. I’m trying it on an interim basis but have to admit that I’ll probably be going back to strictly RSS in the future. But I see no reason why I shouldn’t offer it as an option.
Thanks for your comment, Eric.
