Configuring Windows Live Writer for Movable Type

Welcome to BloggingNotes. You may want to subscribe to my full text RSS feed. This message will only appear once. Thanks for visiting!
This post will show how to configure WLW to work properly with Movable Type using just a couple of screenshots. This came about from comments and emails that I received on how to set it up properly. I had to do it on my home machine this weekend, anyway, so figured I’d document the whole thing. After clicking on Weblog -> Add Weblog Account, you’ll obviously select Another Weblog Service and click Next. It’s at this point that you’ll enter the URL for the website (not the MT.cgi URL), along with your username and your API password and click Next.

At this point it should be detecting the settings from your website. This took about a minute on both my work and home machines, so it’s not dependant on your connection to the net. Once it succeeds, you should see the following:

Change the name of the blog to whatever you prefer, and click Finish. Once you get it figured out, it really becomes just a two-step process. I’ve contributed a number of posts to Metroblogging Vancouver using WLW, and I haven’t had any problems with it.
If you have issues with the configuration, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me by leaving a comment, and I’ll do what I can to help.
