Options For Your RSS Feed

Date January 3, 2008

Welcome to BloggingNotes. You may want to subscribe to my full text RSS feed. This message will only appear once. Thanks for visiting!

If you’re not using FeedBurner to serve your RSS feed, you definitely should be. While the stock WordPress feed will provide a basic feed, using a customized FeedBurner feed will allow you to do so much more.

Everything from providing your exact location thanks to geotagging, or making it simple to allow your reader to subscribe via email, FeedBurner makes everything easier. In fact, you’re more than welcome to subscribe to BloggingNotes via email in the box on the right sidebar. Enter your address, confirm your email address, and you’re done.

Using FeedFlare, you can allow your subscribers to Stumble, Digg, or email your post to someone they want to share it with with just one click. While there are a wide variety of options that you can deploy with FeedFlare, I’d definitely recommend limiting yourself to three or so features at the most. Anything else tends to get unruly quickly.

You can also monetize your feeds, placing Google Adsense inside your feeds to help generate a little more income. Again, I’d not recommend going for the huge gaudy ads, or you might find yourself with fewer subscribers at the end of the day.

Like I said, FeedBurner makes it dead simple to get your feeds optimized the way that you, and your readers would like to see them. Try adding a feature or two and then poll your subscribers and see what they think.

Thanks for your comment, Stephan. I’ve actually found that I generated more Adsense income from my feeds than the ads that ran on the pages themselves.

I love Feedburner. I prefer to subscribe by email and if I come across a site that doesn’t allow this, I don’t usually subscribe.

It’s been a month or two since I set up Feedburner for my main sites, so I’d forgotten what the default settings are. Yesterday I set up a new feed and noticed that email subscription is not turned on by default. Perhaps this is why some sites don’t allow you to subscribe by email - they just go with the default settings.
