Posting Consistency Is More Important Than Post Length

Do you ever worry about whether that post that you just finished writing is long enough? Chances are, if you got your point across, and said everything that you wanted to say, the post is fine.

One of the best blogging tips I got came from John Chow. Far more important than writing long, wordy posts, is to post consistently. I’ve more or less settled in to a routine on this blog where a post goes live around 7:30am, Pacific time. Then I submit it to BloggingZoom, and move on to following my workflow.

If a second post goes live, I generally try to make it around noon, or closer to the end of the day. But the relatively early morning post is when things go live around here. This gives the post exposure for the whole day, and it’ll either sink or swim on its own.

If you can stick to a schedule, your readers will learn to expect posts from you at about that time, and they may either come to the site if they’re a regular commenter, or they’ll make sure that they’ve got their feed reader up and running to pull your latest post in.

Setting a schedule for posts to go live also tends to ensure that you have it done before it’s time to hit the publish button. Posts written in advance and time stamped to drop at a future time mean that you don’t have to stress about getting the post live before your scheduled time, and you can work on it and refine it until it’s as perfect as you can make it.

And THAT will make you a better blogger in the long run.

    Hi Rod,

    I agree with your article and also disagree. I think that writing content on a consistent schedule is important. However, do let daily posting get in the way of producing great content.

    More than anything else, writing valuable content is the most important thing for your blog. It is what will get noticed on social media sites, gain links and attract readers.

    If you are putting out daily aritlces that are just average and your daily posting schedule is preventing you from writing great content, slow down your posting. Make each great.

    So true. Consistency is also one of the hardest things to pull off in my opinion. The key, I have found, is to write about 2-3 really really great articles per week and then every day write 2-3 filler posts - useful posts, but definately not incredible.

    Fred - you’re absolutely right. Putting out substandard content is worse than not posting anything at all.

    Brian - I’ve found that by planning posts on a Google Calendar, I’m able to do any research that I need to do for a future post. And I have a tendency to write two or three days in advance to help deal with those days when the well runs dry. It’s great for taking the pressure off, believe me. Thanks for your comment.

    Hmm, interesting post, but how can you be consistent enough? Over consistency may result to almost duplicate posts i think… please correct me if I’m wrong.
