Want More Subscribers? Stop Posting
January 23, 2008
Welcome to BloggingNotes. You may want to subscribe to my full text RSS feed. This message will only appear once. Thanks for visiting!
It’s a bit of a weird discovery, although I have to admit that it’s not limited to just BloggingNotes.
It’s been six days since my last post, and in that time, my number of feed subscribers has risen from around 30 to 45 this morning. I’ve seen this on a couple of my other blogs as well, where a bit of a break seems to make the subscriber count go up.
Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean more people checking the feed, because what FeedBurner is actually reporting is the number of times the feed was polled. It might have been the same number of people subscribed, but if they check the feed more often, suddenly the numbers go up.
Best way to confirm this is to see if my numbers settle back down into the low to mid-thirties over the next couple of days.
I’ll keep an eye on it and update tomorrow morning.
Update: The count this morning (Thursday the 24th) was back down into the mid-30s.

I am pretty sure that the ten extra subscribers isn’t due to your not posting. Subscribers like frequent original content. I think that your increase may have just been a coincidence. Just my opinion though. Great blog by the way

That’s good because it shows that people are interested in your blog enough to want to be notified when you post again.

I’ve noticed the same thing on my site when I can’t post for more than 36 hours. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that if you don’t post for over a week, gReader users will no longer show in the count, which could potentially lead to a huge subscription drop

Hey Rod, congrats on the increase, but I think that it may just be luck of coincidence. Like Pablo said, readers are interested in frequent updates. The more content you pump out the more reasons for people to subscribe.
Good luck though

@El DI Pablo: Who knows. When I checked my numbers this morning, they were right back down into the thirties. Kind of like I predicted.
Regardless, there’s certainly no scientific basis for it, it was just something that I had noticed on a number of occasions.
Thanks for your feedback.

@Frank: Never thought of it like that
I’ll keep that in mind.

@Jason: I wasn’t aware that GR readers dropped off after periods of inactivity. Something to think about.

@Brian: Thanks. Like I mentioned earlier, it may be real, it may not be. But the whole post was just because I’d noticed it happening a number of times. And the number settled right back down this morning after I posted yesterday.
