What Five Blogs Would You Follow?

Welcome to BloggingNotes. You may want to subscribe to my full text RSS feed. This message will only appear once. Thanks for visiting!

A post that’s a little less blogging tip as opposed to finding out a little more about my readers.

Imagine for the moment that you had to pick just five feeds to follow - what would your five be, and why?  They don’t necessarily have to be in your niche - they could be purely for information, news or simply because they’re entertaining.

For myself:

  1. Lifehacker: This is a daily requirement for me, and I have more bookmarks tagged ‘Lifehacker’ in my del.icio.us account than anything else.  By far.  Gina is able to come out with some absolutely amazing stuff.
  2. MegFowler.com: I have no idea how I came across Meg’s site (probably a search for other local bloggers), but if you’ve never read her stuff, some of it is hilariously funny, and some of it is a good deal deeper.  But she holds nothing back in her writing (at least she doesn’t appear to), and she isn’t afraid to poke a little fun at herself while trying to figure out where she’s going.
  3. Lorelle on WordPress: I don’t think that there’s a better evangelist for WordPress than Lorelle, simply because she posts what she loves about WordPress, and also what gets her ticked off.
  4. Robert Scoble: For two or three years, Robert Scoble was the face of Microsoft in the blogosphere, and he would equally heap praise and scorn on things that the company did.  If I were to compile a list of my favourite Channel 9 videos, they would all be ones that were shot by Scoble.  And nothing has changed since he left Microsoft for PodTech, and started his own video blog, the ScobleShow.
  5. The Blog Herald: I have to admit that when I first started reading the Blog Herald, I didn’t get a lot of useful information from it.  But since going back about six weeks ago, I am constantly impressed by the quality of the content that gets posted by the various authors, including Lorelle van Fossen, and Tony Hung.  Now it’s where I go for information on the blogosphere and the blogging community.

Even though it’s not my niche, I always follow the marketing and make money online blogs. I guess those are the cornerstones that links blogs together: we want readership and hopefully we can make money from it.

    1. Doshdosh - I love his blog because he provides detailed marketing strategy.
    2. Problogger - Trusted blogging source with helpful suggestions.
    3. John Chow - He also tells you how to make money online when he isn’t rambling about food. Entertaining and informative.
    4. Shoemoney - Totally on the flip side, I follow this blog because I don’t get the attraction. He doesn’t lay out the strategy or offer monetization tips or did I miss it? He says he’s not a blogger but why does he have such a following? He’s obviously successful so I’m trying to understand what I’m missing.
    5. icanhascheezburger - Okay, I have to throw this one in. How can you go wrong with a bunch of silly cat pictures with captions. Makes me smile. :)

Phew! That’s tough. There are a lot of great blogs out there. If I *had* to pick only 5, the following would be serious considerations:

    Andy BeardCopybloggerDosh DoshProBloggerThe Blog Herald

It would kill me to only visit those 5, but I would have to say those are the 5 I frequent the most.

@mariam: Thanks for the comment. I can’t say that I disagree with any of your choices, just for the reason that you mention. Those are the sites that are in the business of helping you bring more traffic in - which, as you say is the goal of every blog, regardless of niche.

I also don’t see the appeal in Shoemoney, but haven’t started following yet to see if I can get it.

@J: It is tougher than it sounds, isn’t it? Like Mariam’s five, I’d be hard pressed to disagree with any of yours.

Although I’ve heard of all of the ones you mentioned, I haven’t really followed anything by Andy Beard. Maybe I’ll check it out.

Thanks for the comments. Very much appreciated.
