Why Do You Blog About Blogging?

Date January 17, 2008

Welcome to BloggingNotes. You may want to subscribe to my full text RSS feed. This message will only appear once. Thanks for visiting!

No, I haven’t become disillusioned with the whole thing.  I’ve been taking a little time off, though to try and refocus on things.  I’ve developed a couple of new niche blogs, which I plan on devoting time to growing.  If one of them hits big, I’m going to be very happy indeed, because I think it’s got a lot of potential.

I have to give thanks to Vic for a post that actually pushed me in the right direction to make this happen.

But I don’t want anyone to think that I’m abandoning BloggingNotes.  I know that blogging about blogging isn’t a big money-making niche, but you know what?  I don’t care.  I started this blog to pass on some of the cool information that I came across, but it’s turned in to much more than I would have thought it would, and, as I said all along, I’m going to keep doing it as long as I enjoy it.

As I said, I’ve got other sites that I’m working to try and bring in some income, and I’m finally starting to see a couple of sites bring in enough to pay for registration and hosting on my other sites, but the goal is to get me out of the place where I’m living now and into a better place.  I’m going to work as hard as I can to make sure that that happens, and I’m hoping that this new site is going to be a big part of helping me do just that.

So now you know why I’m doing this - I work on BloggingNotes because I get a huge amount of satisfaction by learning and passing on the information that I learn to my readers.

If you’re blogging about blogging, why do you do it?

This is the perfect way to go about it. I have said that blogging for money and bogging for fun sometimes are not in the same wagon. Hope those niches start paying some cash ;)

@Jims: It definitely does. I believe that that’s the exact reason that many people turn to blogging in the first place.

@Vic: Thanks for the feedback. I’m going to keep doing the fun stuff, but, you’re right - it’s time to get to work.

And they’re going to pay off because I’m going to work at them until they do. :)

Great post Rod. I blog about blogging for networking and support purposes, and to learn the ropes before undertaking the niche that I really am interested in covering (which happens to be local events and life, great timing for the 25k challenge). I’ve actually put Fresh Geeks in the back seat also, and plan on using it to help bloggers get more exposure and juice as FG now has some PR to offer ;).

You’re so right Rod - blogging isn’t a very wealthy niche to be in. I do it for the readers. I initially wanted the money, but now I’m all about getting subscribers, comments, backlinks, and growing my online presence.

You know… I’m starting to get tired of the bloggers who spend more time blogging about it supposedly being a bad idea to blog about blogging than they do about anything else.

The thing is, a lot of us STILL read blogs about blogging. I mean, I have more than twenty feeds that belong to blogs about blogging. So, in essence, it’s still a niche with a lot of readers. otherwise, why would people still be doing it, and why would people still be reading and interacting with it?

I don’t comment much, but I’m a loyal readers of your and I come back as often as possible. I love your content, and contrary to what a lot of “A-list” bloggers proclaim, I find it to be a hot topic.

It might not be a profitable topic in most cases, but it’s one that has a following and loyal community.

Keep with it. A lot of us enjoy our BloggingNotes fix.

Blogging is an important part of our culture, our business model, our social interaction and our way of learning. Blogging matters, so of course blogging about blogging matters. I read blogs about blogging because those authors understand that and want to elevate the practice.

My blog is dedicated to my passion–blog authors and blog readers–and I think if you do what you love, money and non-monetary rewards will follow. If you ever stop loving it, that’s a good time to move on to something else.

    Good post!

@JBlu: that is good timing considering Vic’s challenge. Now I just need to find a way to promote the new niche blog in addition to BloggingZoom.

@Brian: When I saw the traffic that was coming in when I started this site I figured I’d found my money making blog. But my eyes have been opened since then. So now I’m doing this blog for no reason other than I love doing it.

@Eric: Thank you very much for the comment. Nice to be appreciated. And don’t worry, I’m not going away. I enjoy working on this site too much to give up on it. And I reade probably 10 blogs about blogging myself. I just have resigned myself to not making money from BN. And that’s just fine.

@Blog Starr: I couldn’t agree more. Once it stops being fun it becomes work. And if you’re able to make your work fun then you’re better off than most of the world. Thanks for your feedback.

My reasons are very much in line with your own Rod, I enjoy it and take pleasure in passing on information and knowledge. So many blogs about blogging concentrate on SEO and making money that I wanted to reach those who blog for fun.

Developing a community of regular readers means that you can address what they want to learn about more specifically, so although there are many blogs about blogging I still feel that there is value in what I am doing.
